Now in 2017, aged 64 myself, I have arrived at the final book of the trilogy. It begins in late 2011, and despite Belle our Border Collie pup having arrived a few months ago, there is no sign of our urge to travel waning. With a world cruise behind us (Absent Voyagers: Tales from a World Cruise) and another three voyages to the lands of glaciers, geysers, and fjords but with some chocolate heaven thrown in (Restless Legs: A Wife on the Ocean Wave), it is time to float off once again. This book will present yet more ports of call, as diverse in their cultures as in their location. The ships we sail on provide the transport , entertainment, comfort, sustenance, and the chance to meet many interesting characters both on board and ashore. From the Arctic to the Aegean, the Bosphorus, Black Sea, and the Mediterranean, to the islands of the Caribbean and the Atlantic, it will immerse you in an atmosphere of history and exploration with detail and humour. It will meander off occasionally as I recall other places in another time. Belle contributes freely in her Pupdate, giving a new twist to this tale of travel. “Calamity” returns to print, as does “Dreary”.
The book visits 39 different ports, some of them more than once admittedly, so actually 68 anchorages, but exciting and distinctive on each occasion.

From Hawaii to Hong Kong, Fiji to Fremantle, New York to Nha Trang, Panama to Penang, Curaçao to Citvitavecchia……..it’s all in the book.
For anyone interested in travelling, this personal travelogue will certainly whet your appetite. It is intended as a light hearted and tongue in cheek account of, not only life on a cruise ship, but also relationships. Crammed full of observations, and a personal view of over 30 ports of call, it is not just about the voyage, but life in general. Take the trip with me, and laugh along the way.
Come on and join us by immersing yourself in Absent Voyagers. The book provides an insight into life on board Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on her inaugural world cruise in 2011. The cast comprises Marje and Tom, and the many people and places they encounter along the way. An unusual twist is added as they move house several times whilst on the high seas. Find out how that was achieved. Introducing Calamity!
Enjoy the journey. Absorb the atmosphere. Be transported to far flung places. Steal a glimpse into our life while you read.

The suitcases lie open and yawning on the bed in the spare room; formal wear now redundant. It is April 2011 and only seven days since we returned from our world cruise. I have still to muster up any enthusiasm for unpacking, meal planning, and housework in general. For 104 days, we were spoilt and pampered aboard Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth on her inaugural world voyage. Now back in the tiny village of Hutton in the Scottish Borders, I wonder what we shall do next, where we shall live in the longer term, or even when it might happen.
The new computer lurks on the landing, tempting me with its touchscreen, calling to me as a welcome diversion from the unpacking. I fall into its clutches and load up all our photographs, all two thousand of them. Now there’s another huge task, editing that lot and making sense of it all. My travel journal may become a book one day.
I am gazing at the task that confronts me when Tom yells upstairs, for me to come downstairs. I sigh, imagining that he is expecting to be served lunch, as that is what he has become accustomed to. He needs to snap out of this. But no…he has news to impart. He is actually rather upbeat and excited about something. I arrive in the kitchen to find him pouring over an advertisement for a fly-cruise to Alaska. He knows that it is on my wish list and already has the phone in his hand to book my passage. Tom will not fly, so I am to go it alone.
“When?” I ask, assuming this will be in a few months.
“In ten days’ time” he beams with disturbing enthusiasm.
“What?” I splutter, thinking he has lost his mind. I am speechless, something of a rarity, but it seems that the deal is being done even as I stand there with my jaw on the floor.
Alaska here I come…………The unpacking seems less daunting now. I have all the incentive I need.
My life is a voyage of discovery and my sea legs are restless.
This follow-up to Absent Voyagers: Tales from a World Cruise will transport the reader to Alaska at a moment’s notice, then onward during another 3 voyages to the lands of glaciers, geysers, and fjords but with some chocolate heaven thrown in Belgium.
Introducing “Dreary” and “Belle the Border Collie”
It is pure escapism, peppered with facts, insights and laced with humour.
